Summary

THE NO。1 FRENCH BESTSELLER

Just outside a hotel in Bordeaux, Philippe, a famous writer, chances upon a young man who bears a striking resemblance to his first love。 What follows is a look back to Philippe's teenage years, to a winter morning in 1984, a small French high school, and a carefully timed encounter between two seventeen-year-olds。 It's the start of a secret, intensely passionate, world-altering love affair between Philippe and his classmate, Thomas。

Dazzlingly rendered by Molly Ringwald, the acclaimed actor and writer, in her first-ever translation, Besson's exquisitely moving coming-of-age story captures the tenderness of first love - and the heart-breaking passage of time。

The story the author tells is sad, in all the ways every lost-love story is sad。 If not for its obnoxiously impressionistic yet well-executed style (how very French), this could be any romance novel。 Leaving out the HEA does not good literature make。

I think I will try to reread this in french when I have the patience, because something feels off about the translation。

This book shattered my heart into a million pieces。 Such a poetic and heart-wrenching book, made me sob like a baby。 Definitely a new favourite。

It’s a beautiful, coming-of-age love story about the bitterness of first love and self-acceptance。 Beautiful and tender writing。The most solid four stars I’ve ever given。

Boring and underdeveloped。 This novel tells the story of a famous novelist reminiscing over a short-lived teenage romance with a closeted boy named Thomas。 Not a very interesting plot, the novel felt rushed。 Besson tries to present a heartbreaking teenage love affair without evoking much emotion。 The narrator repeatedly mentions how he is an award winning novelist who owns beach homes and goes on international book tours, and yet very few details are ever given about his life。 A very surface lev Boring and underdeveloped。 This novel tells the story of a famous novelist reminiscing over a short-lived teenage romance with a closeted boy named Thomas。 Not a very interesting plot, the novel felt rushed。 Besson tries to present a heartbreaking teenage love affair without evoking much emotion。 The narrator repeatedly mentions how he is an award winning novelist who owns beach homes and goes on international book tours, and yet very few details are ever given about his life。 A very surface level book to capture what is described as a non-surface level relationship。 I was also not a fan of the narrator’s final commentary on men who cannot come out of the closet, describing them as “disoriented” and "lost。" 。。。more

I don’t know if the real sentiment and feelings were lost in translation, but overall just felt like this book could have captured so much more emotion。 It was a story of young love lost, but I just never got the strong sense that they belonged together in the first place。 It felt like a relationship of convenience more than anything else, so when they parted ways it was expected and not particularly heartbreaking。 I also didn’t love how their lives crossed paths again twenty years later。 Some o I don’t know if the real sentiment and feelings were lost in translation, but overall just felt like this book could have captured so much more emotion。 It was a story of young love lost, but I just never got the strong sense that they belonged together in the first place。 It felt like a relationship of convenience more than anything else, so when they parted ways it was expected and not particularly heartbreaking。 I also didn’t love how their lives crossed paths again twenty years later。 Some of the writing was nice and I appreciate the fact that the author highlighted how horrible it is when one has to hide their true self, but overall this was a miss for me。 。。。more

Stop with your liesThis short novel has three chapters, labelled with the years 1984, 2007 and 2016。 The first chapter (the longest) revolves around the affair between two teenage boys, and is told in the voice of one of them, a writer, looking back at his youth。There's a saying I often thought of reading this book: "Youth is wasted on the young。" When I was young, I didn't really appreciate what this meant。 Another related expression is "If only I knew then what I know now。"This is a first pers Stop with your liesThis short novel has three chapters, labelled with the years 1984, 2007 and 2016。 The first chapter (the longest) revolves around the affair between two teenage boys, and is told in the voice of one of them, a writer, looking back at his youth。There's a saying I often thought of reading this book: "Youth is wasted on the young。" When I was young, I didn't really appreciate what this meant。 Another related expression is "If only I knew then what I know now。"This is a first person narrative, told from the perspective of a writer named Philippe, and dedicated to Thomas (the other boy), so this raises questions about what really happened? Is is true? We only see things from Philippe's point of view; Thomas was always someone who couldn't talk, and remains mysterious。 Yet this is often true of relationships, no matter how much talking happens。 How much do we truly know ourselves, much less another? After I finished reading I discovered the original title was Arrête avec tes mensonges which throws a whole different light on the text。 The English title "Lie With Me" evokes affection, not the telling of lies, but the French title "Stop with your lies" is confrontational。 But who would be saying this or hearing this in the book? [Ha! Now I suddenly remember—this expression is from the very first page, and is something said to Philippe by his mother when he made up stories about people—an obsession that became his career。]Overall, a remarkable beautiful book about the limits of true storytelling and the true nature of fiction。 Now I have to read more from this author! 。。。more
